Water Filter Salt - Tablet Salt for Softeners and Treatment Systems

Water filter salt is not there for taste. It regenerates the ion-exchange resin: the resin collects hardness minerals, and the brine restores its working capacity. What matters is not the filter brand but the purity of the salt: NaCl 99.5% or higher, with no iodine and no anti-caking agents.

What not to put in a filter

  • -Iodized table salt: the iodine and anti-caking agents settle on the resin and shorten its life.
  • -Sea salt: its impurities silt up the bed and clog the injector.
  • -Technical and de-icing salt: the sand and insoluble residue destroy the valve.

Water filter salt: frequently asked questions

What salt does a water filter need?▾
Tablet or granulated salt at NaCl 99.5% purity or higher, free of iodine and anti-caking agents. Iodized table salt, sea salt and technical salt do not work: their impurities settle on the ion-exchange resin and ruin the valve.
How much salt does a water softener use?▾
A household softener serving 3-4 people uses roughly 25-50 kg of salt per month, that is 1-2 bags. The exact figure depends on water hardness and consumption.
Can I put table salt in a filter?▾
No. Iodized table salt contains iodine and anti-caking agents that build up on the resin, shorten its life and can corrode the equipment.
Tablet or granulated: which is better for a filter?▾
Tablet salt dissolves slower and more evenly, so brine concentration stays stable between regenerations. Granulated dissolves faster, which helps when filling the tank for the first time.
Do Ecosoft, Aquaphor or BWT filters need their own salt?▾
No. Filter makers do not produce salt, they repack the same tablet salt. What matters is NaCl purity from 99.5%. Our QEMETICA (Ciech) at 99.5% and Sare Turda at 99.3% work with every ion-exchange system.
How often should I top up the brine tank?▾
Check the level monthly and keep the tank at least half full. The salt must never run out completely: without brine there is no regeneration and the resin stops softening the water.
